"INSPIRATIONAL, LIFE GIVING, JOYFUL"

In 2019/20, sixty new mothers in Bristol took part in a pilot programme for Mothership Writers, supported using public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council England. Here’s what some of our first ever Mothership Writers have to say…

I can’t believe how incredibly lucky I am to have found Mothership Writers. I’ve loved every second of the course. Not only has it given me a range of writing skills and knowledge to be proud of, but it has been my sanctuary, a source of friendship and a safe space to reflect on me as a mother.
— Lowri
Mothership has been a great blessing in my first year-and-a-bit of motherhood. At a time when I felt completely at sea, the sessions provided an anchor-point, and an opportunity to breathe and take time for myself creatively. Emylia is a kind, thoughtful and generous instructor, and the group sessions are warm and encouraging, creating a very safe creative space. That has been an incredible gift, and I would urge anyone thinking of taking this course to seize the opportunity.
— Maria
The course was absolutely inspiring and so good for the soul. Amid the sleepless nights and juggling being a mother-of-two, I never thought I would be able to find so much creative energy in me.
— Aurelie
The Mothership course has helped me to find my voice as a writer and a mother.
— Hannah
Emylia is warm, witty and hugely supportive. I couldn’t imagine someone more suited to working with new mothers to develop their creative writing. She is passionate about helping participants to tell their story, always sensitive, gently encouraging us to explore.
— Zoe
An inspirational, life giving, joyful course, packed full of well presented and positioned lessons and notes on how to develop myself as a writer. Who knew it was even possible to write with a babe in arms? But it totally is! Thank you Mothership.
— Rebecca
Delivered by a kind, understanding and enthusiastic writer who reminded me why I used to write and how important creative expression is.
— Helen
Emylia made it such a safe space where you could truly talk and write about motherhood without worrying about being judged.
— Jan
It was truly wonderful to be part of a woman centric experience and free to express ones self in a truly safe space that was only achievable because we all shared in that sense of motherhood. No matter our backgrounds or education we were all mothers who were given an opportunity to have our voice heard.
— Louise
Mothership provides me with an amazingly supportive safe space to process my feelings on motherhood while also taking time for myself and building my writing practice in a low stakes environment. Mothership was one of the best things I’ve ever done for myself and I am a markedly more confident writer now due to the course.
— Eleanor
The absolute best thing you can do for your mind.
— Deanna
Mothership Writers is an incredible space that offers a rare opportunity to document the beginnings of motherhood. Society pushes motherhood to the fringe of everyday life, so to have a community where you can authentically be a mother is really precious. I’ve laughed and cried my way through this course, but it’s been the best welcome in to Motherhood.
— Sarafina
The new ability to express myself honestly on to pages is one of the most cathartic tools for motherhood I’ve found. It’s helped so much at a time when sometimes I struggle to be truthful about my thoughts and feelings, even to my closest family and friends.
— Kate
Mothership Writers is a lifeline for the woman who has become a mother: a creative, supportive space where intellect can be stimulated, new skills can be practiced, and the emotional rollercoaster of new motherhood can be navigated - and it doesn’t matter if your baby cries, because chances are, so are everyone else’s!
— Nina
Being part of Mothership Writers was such a valuable experience for me in so many ways. It gave me an insight into writing that I’d never had access to before, and it really bolstered my confidence in my own ability to write (as well as making me determined to find the time to write during a very busy period of life). Not to mention the importance of feeling supported by such a wonderful group of women; there were so many emotions to be felt throughout those sessions and it is a testament to Emylia that we all felt like it was a safe space to share our pieces of writing with each other, particularly when they were often highly personal pieces
— Imogen
Mothership Writers was a refuge. Not just a sacred time every fortnight for creative writing, but a space where I felt we shared our vulnerability, spoke honestly about our challenges, found laughter and celebrated motherhood.
— Kat
Mothership Writers was one of the highlights of my maternity leave. I feel so lucky to have been part of it and it has awoken a love of writing and reading that has continued after the course.
— Danielle
If you think writing is not for you, think again! This course proved to me that everyone has something to say and that it is possible for everyone to tap into their creativity. The subject of motherhood holds a huge pool of inspiration and it is also really therapeutic to explore. I definitely recommend it.
— Liz
I now have a collection of pieces for my daughter when she is older, things I would have always dreamed to write down but would never have found the time. I developed the confidence to do something for myself alongside looking after my daughter and the confidence to just write.
— Grace

Emylia made the course fun, educational and safe to be able to write our true and honest experiences of motherhood. I would recommend this course for any new mum and I wish it didn’t have to come to an end.
— Kimberley
Mothership Writers has been without a doubt the best thing I have done during Maternity Leave. At a time when there is so much focus on the baby, it felt amazing to attend a group where the focus is on the mother and her creative output. Emylia has created something wonderful, and I will miss it so much.
— Claire
So much more than a creative writing course. The journey we have all been on together is something I’ll cherish forever
— Charlie
Mothership Writers has allowed me to find my voice, and explore what motherhood means for me. Unlike other mum and baby groups where you sometimes are just “mum”, you come to Mothership Writers and feel your uniqueness celebrated.
— Abi
The Mothership Writers course gave me the space and time to be creative again. From the very first session I was made to feel extremely welcome and it allayed my fears about my baby disturbing the group, it was such an inclusive and accepting environment. I am so grateful to have rediscovered my love of writing.
— Jo
Attending Mothership Writers was the single most valuable thing I’ve done since having a baby for my emotional wellbeing and I cannot recommend it highly enough. The group felt so refreshing compared to many parent-baby groups and the process of writing did so much for my sense of identity and my new journey of motherhood.
— Aly
Mothership Writes brought me peace, joy, and self-confidence at a really difficult and exhausting time. There is something so beautiful and so special about being able to negotiate the complexities of new motherhood not only with amazing other mothers but thorough finding the confidence and skill to write. At times I felt like it was the only thing keeping me vaguely sane. Emylia and the other mothers created a space that for me was truly life changing. I cannot speak highly enough of every aspect.
— Sarah Louise
Mothership writers was a pair of huge arms that held me tightly. I found my voice here. I found a passion here. I found like minded people here and I found creativity and reflection here. It should be compulsory for all new mothers!
